Paper Abstract:      The sector of Higher Education in Germany is currently facing new challenges and incentives. Both the “excellence initiative” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the implementation of the Bologna declaration are outlining the avenues of potential for e-learning and are forcing the universities to act. In this atmosphere of transition, flexibility, modularity and market orientation are increasingly perceived as key topics within Higher Education. Conspicuously, these are the very same issues being discussed within the realm of e-learning. Thus, the integration of elearning is becoming a strategic, yet challenging goal, making it crucial for universities to highlight their e-learning activities and to present a modern profile to the public. The institutional website provides opportunities for adequate public relations, but are German universities really tapping the full potential of their Web presence? This article presents results of a survey on the traceability of e-learning information within German university websites. We argue that organizational development and the information design of institutional websites are closely intertwined.
